Tony Mathias

Excerpt from Tony’s daughter, Francine:

My Dad was a gentle man, but one didn’t dare get him mad or scare him, because he could throw a punch. If he put his mind to do something he could certainly find a way to get it done.  So, when he came up with the idea of having Elmo Powwow he went to Tribal Council and got funding to have it, he got some community members to help him. Here we are today having the 46th annual Elmo Powwow!

His determination and unwavering spirit set the foundation for what has become a beloved tradition, drawing people from far and wide. Each year, the powwow has grown, weaving together stories, songs, and dances, and creating a vibrant tapestry of culture and memory. The echoes of his original vision can still be felt in every beat of the drum, every bright regalia on the dance floor, and every smile shared around the campfire. It’s a testament to what one person’s willpower and love for their community can achieve—an enduring legacy that continues to unite and inspire new generations.

In his vision of drawing people to Elmo, in his first welcoming at the start of Elmo Powwow he said” I’d like to welcomepeople from all over the world” and I believe there has been people from all over in attendance over the years!

Year after year, as the summer sun casts its golden light over the gathering, generations come together—elders passing down wisdom, youth stepping into the circle for the first time, and friends old and new reconnecting in celebration. Vendors line the grounds with handmade crafts and traditional foods, the air rich with the scents of frybread and stew. The sound of laughter mingles with song, and the steady heartbeat of the drum reminds everyone of the spirit that first brought them here.
